Island Batik Ambassador's Paper Pieced Celebrations Blog Hop

This month the Island Batik Ambassadors are showing off brand new collections that will be out shortly!  We were challenged to create paper pieced projects.  These could be foundation paper piecing or English paper piecing.

I received Dots and Doodles by Carol Moellers Designs.  The fabrics are very modern and large scale.  I knew I wanted to make something with large pieces to really show off the fabrics.

Designs with paper pieced feathers have been popular for awhile so I decided to try my hand at one.  However, I wanted them to be HUGE!  What to do?  I could draw my feather and then have the image blown up, but large scale copies are expensive.  Then, one day, as I was sitting in my classroom it occurred to me that the large roll paper we use for bulletin boards was 3 feet wide.  Perfect.  I grabbed a piece and drew my feathers full scale.  We had no white, but yellow paper worked great.  Here you can see the pieces in progress.  My Schmetz Microtex Needles and Aurifil thread had no trouble going through the paper.  It also ripped really easily because it was so thin.  My Oliso iron worked wonderfully to get these pieces nice and flat before adding the next one.  It was a bit challenging with 36" long sections to piece!

And here are the finished feathers!  So fun to see so much of the print.  The quilting was done by my mom with my favorite Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/Poly batting.  I love how it looks like the feathers are floating on the wind.

My bulb garden is showing off right now.  What a perfect background!

Island Batik is giving away two fat quarter bundles this week.  You can enter below.

Reflection's Blog Hop

My friend Jennifer Fulton of The Inquiring Quilter has her first Island Batik collection out now.  It's called Reflections and it's beautiful.

I made two cute Clam Up bags from Patterns by Annie with the fabric from Reflections.  They turned out so cute!

Here are all the fabrics in the collection.  So many pretty ones to choose from!

Jennifer has a GIVEAWAY going too!  Be sure to check out the first link below to enter!

Island Batik Ambassador's Funky Friends Challenge

This month the Island Batik Ambassadors were challenged to make fun stuffed animals by Funky Friends Factory!  I let my older son choose the animal he wanted as my younger son has the last one I made.  He chose a manatee.  Then of course my younger son had to have one too so I ended up making two.  Funnily enough they chose coordinating colors.  The day I finished them I happened to be going to the hairdressers so I took them along for a photo shoot.

One of the Island Batik Ambassador sponsors this year is Oliso.  Here is my younger son's manatee dubbed "Manitoba" cuddling with my iron.  I LOVE how flat my Oliso gets yardage!  He loves to put his hands on it and watch it go up and down.

The picture directions on Funky Friends Factory website made sewing these creatures so much easier!  They were wonderful.  I did use a lot of pins, but they came out well in the end and my Aurifil Thread held strong.

My husband loves to take photographs so here are the sea cows eating some grass.  He was laying on his stomach in the part to take this picture and some middle school age kids came along and thought he was dead because he wasn't moving.  He assured them he was fine, just taking pictures.

I hope you get to quilt today!
